50 questions to ask your parents before it’s too late.

Most of us wait until it’s too late to ask. These are the questions that get the real stories: how they met, what they survived, the recipe they never wrote down, and who should get Grandma’s ring.

Pick three. Ask one at dinner this week. Then just listen.

How to get the real story

  • Record it. Your phone’s voice memo app is enough. Their voice is the part you’ll miss most.
  • Ask one question, then wait. Silence is fine. Count to five before you speak.
  • The best stories come from follow-ups: “What happened next?” “How did that feel?” “Who else was there?”
  • Bring an old photo. Ask, “What’s happening here?” and let it lead.
